Respect Your Roots Worldwide is an continuation of the “The Worldwide Tribute To The Real Oi” Part I & II and the “Respect Your Roots” compilation that were released on I Scream Records a decade ago. While “Respect Your Roots” featured only Dutch & Belgian hardcore bands paying tribute to old school hardcore, this new release finds bands from all over the world (hence the “-Worldwide”) doing a rendition of their favorite bands. This time they were not restricted to a genre or a style and this result in a eclectic mix of punk, hardcore, oi!, rock and some metal.

This is the second release on Strength Records, a label found by Roger Miret (Agnostic Front) and Onno Cro-Mag. It is Roger’s band that kicks off with a great version “Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones. After that it is 32 more songs of excellent covers. While all bands do a good job highlights for me personally are: Dropkick Murphys “Badlands” (Bruce Springsteen), Beowulf “Diplomatic Immunity” (G.B.H.), Peter Pan Speedrock “New Rose” (The Damned), No Turning Back “Ready To Fight” (Negative Approach), Napalm Death “Lifeline” (Sacrilege), The Bones “Punch You In The Face” (The Child Molesters), Rancid “Someone’s Gonna Die” (Blitz) and Ringworm “The Nightmare Continues” (Discharge).

In some cases it’s because I like to originals so much, for others its more that I like the band that’s playing the cover.. What I mean to say is that there’s probably something for everyone on this compilation.

I assume that most songs were recorded in different studios all over the globe but it never shows, cause the production and mastering makes it a coherent total.

The CD comes with an 36 page booklet with bandpictures, info and a story from each band about the song they chose to cover.

Hats off to Onno & Roger for picking up where they left off ten years ago and managing to put together another strong line up of bands. I believe “Respect Your Roots Worldwide” is only the second or third release on Strength Records and the future looks bright if this is any indication of what’s ahead! Together with the resurgence of the European Hardcore Party (which was held last weekend, 2 dec. Organised by Onno / Strength Records) it’s clear to see who’s keeping the scene alive.
